________________________________ LETTER FROM THE EDITOR __________
by debbie resnick
> JournalStaff@ihen.org

Welcome to the May issue of "IHEN Journal." This will be the first
month I edit our newsletter, and I'm thrilled to be a part of
something so important. I would like to introduce myself to all of
you. My husband, Jeff, and I have been homeschooling our youngest
child since he was an infant. He's 8 now, and is curious about
everything around him. We have five other children, who are all grown
and on their own. They're all spread out over the US. We have children
in California, Alabama, Indiana, and Nevada. Our second oldest is in
the Navy, aboard the USS Nimitz, currently deployed in the Persian
Gulf. We also have two grandchildren, who live with their mother and
father in Alabama.

We homeschool in an eclectic fashion, dictated primarily by Micah's
interests and immediate needs. Micah has Tourette's Syndrome and
ADHD, so we do a lot of "creative modification!"

I hope that I can get to know more about all of you. I also hope that
you will feel free to let me know what you like and don't like, and
any special topics you would like to see addressed in this forum.

Thank you in advance for all your support, and I hope you enjoy the
newsletter each month.

Enjoy this issue!

UNITS, CURRICULA, AND PLANS ... OH MY! (Part 1)

Welcome to another edition of Hoosier Homeschoolers Online. Over the
next couple of months I will be featuring some of the cross-
curricular, multi-subject sites that I have discovered online.
Most of these sites are lesson plan data banks and all of them cover
many different subjects. I find myself returning to some of these
sites over and over again while looking for homeschooling resources
and ideas. I hope you enjoy them as much as I have.
Happy surfing! -jr

HAPPY DNA DAY! (Happy Helix Day?)

April showers bring may flowers, but also Earth Day and DNA Day.
Check out his link to investigate and celebrate DNA Day.

The original article published about DNA 's discovery by Watson and
Crick in Nature on April 25, 1953 was only a page long. The discovery
of the DNA double helix involves several individuals, such as,
Rosalind Franklin, Maurice Wilkins, and Erwin Chargoff. The
importance of this work was acknowledged in 1962 by awarding the
Nobel prize for medicine or physiology, the highest award the
international community can give for scientific discovery, to its
discoverers. Rosalind Franklin died in 1958 and Nobel prizes are
given only to living scientists, so the prize was shared by Watson,
Crick, and Franklin's associate, Maurice Wilkins.

The human genome was mapped out on July 26, 2000 ahead of schedule
and under budget. The planned date was to complete the human genome
on the 50th anniversary of the discovery. Enjoy a belated Happy DNA
Day.

HOMESCHOOLING DADS (a new NHEN web site section)

New, to the NHEN web site: "For Dads by Dads"

Fathers whose families decide to homeschool may have a lot of
questions that can perhaps be best addressed by fathers who are
already homeschooling. This section of the NHEN website will provide
stories by homeschooling Dads who share their experiences and their
ideas. Currently there is not a lot of support for homeschooling Dads
but that is starting to change. If you know of other resources that
will help other dads or have other comments/suggestions, please send
them to > forDads@nhen.org

TEN GOOD REASONS TO HOMESCHOOL
by Greg Sherman, Ph.D

Greg says: "I represent one of those conflicted homeschooling parents
whose professional experiences are rooted in public education. In
fact, both my wife and I began our educational careers in the
classroom. Shelly was a primary grade teacher, and I taught junior
high school science".

"The question "Why do you homeschool?" has been one of the most
difficult education-related question for me to answer truthfully. In
fact, over the years I have developed no less than four different
types of answers".

JUST THE FAQ's

FAQ pages or Frequently Asked Questions pages, are one of the most
common modules on many web sites, yet the most under used. That's too
bad. So many questions could be answered if one simply took a moment
to read through a FAQ page.

Does IHEN have one? Sure! Actually, we have an interactive FAQ page,
thanks to Bravenet.com. What we have access to, is a database
system, that breaks down questions into topics, and allows visitors
to actually ask questions, which will be answered in a day or two,
and then possibly added to the databse, so everyone can learn! Cool,
yes?

Check our our new FAQ database at the followng URL:
or simply look for the graphic FAQ icons throughout the web site.

If you have a more personal question you would like to ask, regarding
the web site or the entire IHEN.org Web Project, don't hesitate to
write me! > BenBennett@ihen.org

And before I go, please think about helping us Help Hoosiers
Homeschool. It takes so little to help us keep the site going.
