GRAB THE OVEN MITS!:
Hot Links, Comin' Through!

by benjamin bennett

I know what you've seen before. You're taking a little free time, and playing around the Internet, looking for something interesting to show the kids, or even something new for yourself. You check the "link lists" of various pages.

Then it hits you: a 10 MegaByte page of nothing but links! Immediately... your eyes glaze over, and you surf to another site -- any site -- just to get a break before you pass out.

Well, rest easy. The one thing we promise you here, is very little information. But what you DO get, is quality. If this site editor or the staff of IHEN don't think the site is worth going to... we don't post it. Better yet, we're going to try using a "5 Star" rating for each site. Any link that is 2 stars or less, we don't even post. We'll update this page regularly, and links that get good ratings, will be archived on our regular links pages.

We'll give YOU, the viewer, a chance to rate the links as well. So, let us know what you think and we can save everyone from glazing over and passing out.

HOT LINKS!

These links change day to day, and week to week, so you may want to bookmark this page and come back often. Resources are listed by subject order and by whatever subject we're talking about lately. :-) Links that are reviewed and given a favorable rating of 3 or more stars, are archived in our Links Archive.

Inspire is like having an entire reference library at home. Play with it, spend a little time learning how to use it, and answers to your reference questions will always be at your fingertips! If you have a problem or can't find something you can call or e-mail a real person for help. Wonderful! - Tammy Children's librarian and homeschooling mom.

STUDY PAGES - LITERATURE:

I like this page for literature. It has a syllabus, writing assignments, study guides, etc. I just copied and pasted these into my word processor and put it into a binder and I have an instant class that has really impressed the colleges. It should cover about 3 years of really good literature. FREE!!!

My recommendation is to cut and paste them and get the copies made now if you like them, because they have disappeared and/or changed over the years.

Advice: The important things (in my opinion) we have done with our daughter are lots of writing which automatically increases vocabulary and grammar skills while reinforcing the information in her mind, lots of logic classes which have helped reinforce her math skills and her ability to deal with what she reads, and lots of public speaking. 4H has a public speaking category, she is on a debate team, etc. I hope this helps! STUDY PAGES - LATIN:

We also did a Latin program (using Wheelock's Latin which I got at half-priced books for $7). This not only increased her vocabulary, it really helped teach English grammar and really helped her pick up Spanish. There is a study guide to Wheelock's that is available online for free. I just downloaded and printed it.

TESTING: MATH PLACEMENT
For math, Saxon has some tests that you can do (free and online) which help place you in the right math level.
